Pupils showcased their public speaking skills at the Junior Speaks competition, held on Wednesday 18th June and organised by the Rotary Club of Teignmouth.
The event, held at the school, brought together entrants from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 to present speeches on topics of their choice.
Pupils impressed the audience with a thoughtful and well-researched presentation on a variety of subjects including the school itself, sports, skiing, singing, animals, even the importance of sound! To name a few.
The competition was judged by Rotarians Colin Barber (President), Mike Keith (who was the compere), Doug Battam, Mike Moult and Keith Robinson. The judges were all very impressed by the confidence and bravery of the participants and congratulated each and everyone of them. They commented "standing in front of a roomful of strangers and encouraging them to listen to what you have to say is no easy task! These children have all done remarkably and should be very proud". All participants received certificates in recognition of their hard work. There were 2 first place prizes and 2 runner up prizes and the children were scored on their presentation, content, confidence and delivery.
A very well done to Grace Seager who achieved first place in the years 5 - 6 category with her speech about biscuits. Marylou Hancock was runner-up in the same category speaking on "how to survive siblings". Raffy Wooding achieved first place in the years 3 -4 category delivering a speech on elements of the periodic table and Max Saw who was runner-up in the same category speaking on sports.
The Rotary Club hopes to continue encouraging young voices through this much-loved annual event.
